Coronavirus (COVID-19) advice for Foster and Kinship Carers

Regulations have been implemented to reduce the spread of coronavirus within Australia and our Northern Territory communities and it is up to each of us to play a role in keeping each other safe.

Territory Families has developed a Q&A to help Foster and Kinship Carers understand the impact of coronavirus on current care arrangements and what this means for you, the child or children you care for, and your family.

If a child in your care is sick and has symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) it is important that you seek medical attention by calling your doctor or health clinic first. Alternatively, call the national hotline on 1800 020 080 to seek advice on whether the child needs testing. If the child does need testing, you will be directed to the NT COVID-19 testing hotline.

You must also inform your Case Manager or Central Intake ( 1800 700 250 ) about the test and the outcome of all test results. This ensures it is recorded on the child’s record.

Caring for other children

During this time, it is vital that our most vulnerable Territorians are looked after in safe and secure homes, and we would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist in caring for a child. If you have the means and capability of caring for other children or young people, please contact our Placements Team on 8922 7590.

Talking to children about COVID-19

Please see below useful information from the Department of Education about how to talk to children and young people about coronavirus that you may find useful. Health messages about coronavirus have also been developed in Aboriginal languages and have been released on the Department of Health website.
