New action plans give youth a strong voice
Territory Families, Housing and Communities (TFHC) has put their support behind new action plans to improve outcomes for young people in Nhulunbuy and Palmerston.
The Palmerston Second Action Plan will enable young people’s voices to be heard through a new Palmerston Youth Representative Group, which will be coordinated by the YMCA, and enables members to be involved in shaping and delivering actions.
The plan supports young people having safe access to public spaces by continuing to provide a safe transport home from activities, providing security at youth activity events and working with the Youth Representative Group to improve safety and involve people in the solutions.
The inaugural Gove Peninsula and Homelands Youth Action Plan will identify opportunities to strengthen young people, and to ensure that place-based activities and services are meeting their needs, giving them the best chance to grow up strong and to realise their aspirations.
The plan has been developed with the guidance of a committed and passionate Steering Group made up of Gove Peninsula and Homelands youth service providers.
The plan makes recommendations across three priority areas to support young people growing up in the area:
- Youth friendly spaces for young people after school hours and on weekends
- Collaborative, coordinated approaches to both funding and youth service provision
- Young people feel safe and connected to community and services.
