Moving day arrives for Rubix apartments
Up to 70 Territorians will begin moving into 30 new social houses at Rubix apartments, The Narrows from Monday 23 May 2022.
The 2 bedroom units will be home to people from the public housing waitlist, including older Territorians looking to downsize and small families.
Territory Families, Housing and Communities (TFHC) project lead Jennifer West said she was thrilled to see the project come to completion.
Jennifer worked with contractors to ensure that the houses met rigorous building and safety codes and shepherded the project to completion.
“It’ll be hard not to crack a smile over the next couple of weeks when I drive past and see people moving in,” Jennifer said.
“So much work has gone into ensuring these houses are safe, comfortable and somewhere people can be proud to call home.”
Acting Executive Director, Housing Market Reform and Program, Brenden Boyce said the units were owned privately with TFHC signing a head lease arrangement with the owners for 9 years.
“Head leasing arrangements provide financial backing for private providers to expand the availability of housing in the Territory,” Brenden said.
“This not only provides the very real benefit of providing a home for Territorians but also grows the overall availability of housing.”
TFHC Deputy Chief Executive, Regional Services and Communities, Emma White welcomed the new tenants to The Narrows.
“The diversity of Territorians moving into these apartments will be a great addition to the broader Narrows community and the local economy,” Emma said.
“These sorts of milestones are at the heart of what makes working in TFHC so rewarding and makes such a positive difference in our community.”
The apartments have been designed for multi-purpose and flexible future use, providing for long-term suitability over the lifetime of the building.
The units are expected to be fully occupied by the end of June 2022.
