New specialist disability accommodation opens in Darwin

Last week, the doors opened at newly constructed Specialist Disability Accommodation homes in Wanguri, and in Wagaman, Darwin.

The two four-bedroom homes have been designed to accommodate residents with complex disabilities and give them a safe space to receive 24-hour care. Funded and designed by Carpentaria Disability Services, with construction by Greenspace Homes, this initiative was supported through a land grant from the Northern Territory Government.

Both homes include features that go above and beyond the minimum requirements for Specialist Disability Accommodation, setting the standard high! Features include adjustable kitchen benches and bathroom amenities, a sensory room, ample space for mobility equipment and a significant number of additional modifications, to maximise the independence of individuals with complex disabilities.

Specialist Disability Accommodation is transformative for people living with a disability – enabling more autonomy, comfort, and the opportunity to live with others while offering supported connections with community.

These homes are two of four blocks granted for construction of Specialist Disability Accommodation in 2021. Life Without Barriers are nearing completion of homes on two additional land parcels.

Carpentaria was the successful tenderer for three additional land grants to deliver homes in Jingili, Rapid Creek, and Gillen, Alice Springs. Construction on these projects is scheduled to commence later in 2023 and early 2024.

We are incredibly proud to support projects such as these, which continue to empower members of our community living with disability.
