Membership drive open for $500 card

The window for senior Territorians to renew or sign on to receive a $500 pre-paid card is now open for the 2023-2024 Seniors Recognition Scheme.

The scheme is open to residents over the age of 65 and hold a valid Medicare card registered to a Northern Territory residential address.

The card can be used at most businesses in the Territory including at service stations, supermarkets and restaurants and cafes.

Minister for Seniors, Lauren Moss, said the financial support provided by the scheme was recognition of the role older resident’s play in making the Territory the place it is.

“Many of our older Territorians have contributed, and continue to contribute, so much to making the Territory the best place to live,” she said.

“I’m so proud that we can provide some additional assistance to allow our Territorians to visit family, or fill up the car, attend social functions or stay active in sporting groups.”

In the 2022-23 financial year more than 15,000 members were subscribed to the Seniors Recognition Team, equivalent to more than 80 per cent of seniors living in the Northern Territory.

Acting Territory Families, Housing and Communities chief executive Emma White said almost 2000 additional seniors signed up to the scheme this financial year and it was hoped the program would continue to grow.

“We’ve expanded the list of places seniors can use this card to provide greater flexibility in allowing people to choose how they access the scheme,” she said.

“In the past financial year, this card has not only provided invaluable support for older Territorians but injected more than $7.2 million into the Northern Territory’s economy.”

Details about eligibility and how to sign up or renew your membership can be found online at NT Seniors Recognition Scheme page.
