I-124 submarine comes to life

A documentary was recently launched showcasing the expedition and exploration of the Japanese I-124 submarine that was sunk in battle over 80 years ago.

The documentary follows a team of highly trained technical divers, archaeologists and crew as they depart Darwin to undertake a detailed survey of the submarine.

Divers descended into dark waters 50 metres below to capture thousands of high resolution images and footage of the wreck. These photographs have since been amalgamated into a stunning three dimensional model.

The expedition was jointly funded by the Northern Territory Government and Commonwealth Government’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Program, in conjunction with Major Projects Foundation and Flinders University with the generous support of Paspaley Group and the Australian Japanese Association of the Northern Territory.
