Government-funded initiatives at the the Darrandirra Child and Family Centre create a supportive environment for children, young people, and families.

We're always thrilled to witness accomplishments that arise from government-funded initiatives, and the Darrandirra Child and Family Centre in Darwin’s northern suburbs is no exception.

The centre is dedicated to creating a supportive environment for children, young people, and families and it’s pleasing to see so many positive outcomes after funding CAAPS Aboriginal Corporation $815,000 to upgrade the premises and $2.7 million over five years to run the centre.

Mother turns author with Darrandirra’s support

A shining testament to the centre’s efforts is a local mother who recently achieved her dream of becoming a published author.

In 2022, Darrandirra hosted a writing workshop in collaboration with Libraries for All. Among the attendees was a talented young mother whose passion for writing was evident. Her love for writing continued following the workshop, as she wrote her book "Where Are Our Papas?", a tale about twin grandsons remembering their late grandfathers through family storytelling.

The book is now proudly placed on the shelves of Darrandirra's library, available both in print and digitally for the community to enjoy.

This story shines a light on the mother's exceptional talent and reaffirms Darrandirra's crucial role in nurturing individuals to achieve their goals, made possible through government funding.

Quilting and Patchwork Program

The centre recently delivered a Quilting and Patchwork Program, a brilliant initiative designed in partnership with local elders. This program is another example of the centre's thoughtful initiatives to facilitate community engagement through skill-building.

The program offers a creative space where community members can learn craft skills together. Participants channel their creativity into making nursery quilts, which are donated to local newborns at Royal Darwin Hospital Special Care Nursery upon completion.

The Darrandirra Quilting and Patchwork Program goes beyond skill development, fostering deep community connections, promoting well-being, touching the lives of our community's newest members, and creating meaningful intergenerational connections.
