Northern Territory Seniors Policy

Find out how the government is supporting seniors in the Territory through the priorities of the Seniors Policy.

The Northern Territory Seniors Policy

The NT Seniors Policy 2021 - 2026 PDF (3.5 MB) supports active ageing and the evolution of age-friendly communities, where all Territorians:

  • value the ongoing contribution of older people to our society
  • recognise and respond proactively to our growing senior population
  • support our seniors’ independence and wellbeing.

Over the life of the NT Seniors Policy, the demand for services will continue to expand.

Priority areas

The government has identified 4 priority areas and a range of actions which will:

  • provide future directions to address the demands of our ageing population
  • help older people remain in the workforce
  • provide a range of services to support the increased cost of living.
  • aid access through adaptation of the environment to community services and events.

The identified priority areas are:

  • economic participation and financial security
  • safety and security
  • health and wellbeing
  • social inclusion and diversity.

Improve and simplify access

The policy also aims to improve and simplify access for eligible members to the NT Concession Scheme and NT Seniors Recognition Scheme, specifically focusing on seniors who are living in remote areas or on temporary visas who have a Medicare card.

It also recognises the need for easy access to information through broadening methods of distribution and the provision of advisory and interpreter services.

Implementation Plans

The Northern Territory Seniors Policy Implementation Plan 2022-24 PDF (1.0 MB) details the tangible, measurable actions that we will take to deliver on the Policy’s priority areas.

Work will commence in early 2024 on the development of a new Action plan, reflecting on achievements to date and formalising future priorities for the remainder of the life of the Policy.

Progress reporting

Progress Reports highlight the progress and achievements made towards delivering the 5-year Seniors Policy and associated Implementation Plan.
