Categories and eligibility

This page has information on the Northern Territory (NT) Performing Arts Awards categories and the eligibility for each category.

There are 9 categories in the NT Performing Arts Awards:

The People’s Choice Award gives the public the opportunity to vote for an outstanding NT production or an outstanding NT performing artist, creative or production staff.

  • Shows must have been produced by NT artists and been presented in the NT between 1 July 2023 to 20 October 2024.
  • NT based performing artists, creatives and production staff must have been involved in NT produced shows between 1 July 2023 to 20 October 2024.

Nominations can be for any genre of performing arts including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy.

This award celebrates an outstanding NT production recognised by its originality, quality, and its audience reception.

The production can be in any genre of performing arts including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy.

Productions must be NT produced and have employed predominantly NT artists and creatives. The performance must have taken place between 1 July 2023 and 20 October 2024.

For productions produced by individuals, nominees must be:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status
  • 18 years of age and over
  • a current resident of the NT.

Nominees may be required to provide evidence of NT residency by providing a driver’s license, utilities bill, electoral roll registration or other similar documentation.

For productions produced by organisations, these nominated must be:

  • be not-for-profit
  • be legally constituted
  • produce art or primarily operate in support of the arts
  • have their main place of business registered in the NT.

This award recognises a performing artist who has made a significant impact in a NT production.

The performance can be in any genre of performing arts, including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy.

The performance(s) must have taken place between 1 July 2023 and 20 October 2024.

Nominees must be individuals and:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status
  • 18 years of age and over
  • a current resident of the NT.

This award seeks to recognise a young artist between 18 to 25 years of age who has made a significant contribution to the performing arts in the NT on stage or behind the scenes.

The contribution can be in any genre of performing arts including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy.

The individual’s work must have taken place within the last five years.

Nominees must be individuals and:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status
  • 18 years of age and over
  • a current resident of the NT.

This award seeks to recognise the creative talent of choreographers, designers, directors, producers and writers, who form the backbone of outstanding NT productions.

The individual’s work must relate to any genre of performing arts, including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy within the last 5 years.

Nominees must be individuals and:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status
  • over 18 years of age
  • a current resident of the NT.

This award recognises the creative talent of choreographers, designers, directors, producers and writers, who form the backbone of outstanding NT productions.

The individual’s work can be in any genre of performing arts, including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy within the last 5 years.

Nominees must be individuals and:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status
  • 18 years of age and over
  • a current resident of the NT.

This award recognises an inspirational performing arts educator teaching any genre of performing arts including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy within the last 5 years.

Individual nominees must be:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status
  • 18 years of age and over
  • a current resident of the NT.

Organisations nominated must:

  • have their main place of business registered in the NT.

This award recognises work by an individual or organisation which has profiled NT performing arts on a national and/or international stage.

The individual’s or organisation’s work can be in any genre of performing arts including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy within the last five years.

Individual nominees must be:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status
  • 18 years of age and over
  • a current resident of the NT.

Organisations nominated must:

  • have their main place of business registered in the NT.

This award recognises an established arts practitioner who has made a significant, long-term contribution to the NT performing arts sector.

The practitioner will have an extensive track record of more than 10 years of artistic practice and a history of achievements and peer recognition.

The individual’s achievements can be in any genre of performing arts, including dance, music, theatre, musical theatre, opera, circus, physical theatre and comedy.

Individual nominees must be:

  • an Australian citizen or have permanent residence status
  • 18 years of age and over
  • a current resident of the NT.
