Gender equality in the Northern Territory

Gender equality is a human right and fundamental to progress social wellbeing, social justice and community cohesion in the Northern Territory (NT).

It is linked to many positive economic outcomes and social benefits.

By eliminating discrimination, preventing gender-based violence, and challenging harmful stereotypes, we can create a foundation for all Territorians to lead happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

The NT Government has released a Gender Equality Statement of Commitment and Gender Equality Action Plan to support initiatives, processes and practices that drive equality for women, men and people with diverse gender identities.

NT Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-2025

The Northern Territory Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-2025 is the first of its kind in the NT and will lay the foundations for future work to improve gender equality in the NT.

The vision of the Action Plan is that Territorians enjoy an inclusive, healthy, safe, fair and economically secure NT where gender is never a barrier to full participation and inclusion.

The Action Plan will be implemented through across government actions in 5 key focus areas:

  • community engagement
