Darwin Youth and Community Hub

The Northern Territory Government is investing in the future and welfare of young people in the northern suburbs of Darwin with a new Youth and Community Hub in Casuarina. The Darwin Youth and Community Hub will provide young people from 8 to 18, their families and the community with a safe space to hang out and engage in programs, activities and support services.

The Hub will be built on the former Casuarina Fire Station site, well located next to Casuarina Square Shopping Centre, where young people and families from the northern suburbs often visit, close to public transport. The site is zoned as community purpose land and provides the opportunity to build a new fit for purpose facility, including recreational facilities that will support young people into the future.

Design of the Youth and Community Hub

The design of the facility will consider placement of the building and outdoor areas and proximity to the immediate neighbourhood. The foundation values of the Hub support community participation, respect and safety.

Public consultation was undertaken between November 2022 and February 2023 to inform design of the building and the program. Consultation identified 5 key principles to guide design of the Hub.

Services and programs

The Hub will provide young people aged 8 to 18 with a safe place to hang out together to have fun, feel a sense of belonging and connect to the support they need.

The types of programs and activities that will be offered at the Hub will be fun and will also give young people the opportunity develop life skills and be mentored and supported by trusted adults.

A range of youth activity providers and other support services, such as health and wellbeing providers will be able to run their programs and support young people at the Hub.

We will seek proposals from organisations that have the experience and expertise working with young people to run the Hub through an open grant process.

Part of the service delivery model will be the provision of safe transport home in the evenings for young people attending the Hub. There is also public transport available close to the location at Casuarina Square and in some cases, parents will pick up their children.

The operating hours of the Hub will align with school times, opening after school finishes.

The Hub will also enable access and use by other community groups during school hours.
