Darwin Youth Hub
The Northern Territory (NT) Government has committed to establishing a youth hub in the northern suburbs of Darwin as the base for delivering activities and support services for young people. Children and young people from 8-18 years old will be the primary age group that will access the Youth Hub
The Youth Hub will be built on the former Casuarina Fire Station site, well located next to Casuarina Square Shopping centre, where young people and families from the Northern Suburbs often visit, with close proximity to public transport. The site is zoned as community purpose land and provides the opportunity to build a new fit for purpose facility, including recreational facilities that will support young people into the future.
Design of the Youth Hub
The design of the facility will take into account placement of the building and outdoor areas and proximity to the immediate neighbourhood. The foundation values of the Youth Hub support community participation, respect and safety.
Public consultation will be undertaken to inform design of the building and the program, and will be held during December 2022 and January 2023.
Updates on details of public consultation workshops and meetings will be posted on this webpage.
Services and Programs
The Northern Suburbs Youth Hub will provide young people aged 8-18 years old with a safe place to hang out together to have fun, feel a sense of belonging and have the opportunity to connect to the support they need.
The types of programs and activities that will be offered at the Youth Hub will be fun and will also give young people the opportunity develop life skills and be mentored and supported by trusted adults.
A range of youth activity providers and other support services, such as health and wellbeing providers will be able to run their programs and support young people at the Youth Hub.
The Northern Territory (NT) Government will seek proposals from organisations that have the experience and expertise in working with young people to run the Youth Hub through an open grant process during 2023.
Part of the service delivery model will be the provision of safe transport home in the evenings for young people attending the Youth Hub. There is also public transport available close to the location at Casuarina Square and in some cases, parents will pick up their children.
The operating hours of the Youth Hub will align with school times, opening after school finishes.
How can I have my say?
We want to hear from the community about the Youth Hub, and what you think it should include.
There will be two rounds of consultation.
Round 1: All of community (November – December 2022). In the first round, we would like to hear from all interested community members about the new Youth Hub and your hopes and expectations.
Please provide your feedback
Focus groups will also be happening between 28 November and 14 December 2022. Times and venues will be announced soon.
You can sign up to register your interest in a focus group.
Round 2: Local service providers and young people (January 2023) In the second round, we want to hear from service providers and young people about what they would like to see included in the Youth Hub. These focus groups will be happening between 9 January and 27 January 2022. Times and venues will be announced later this year.
